This research aims to analyze the role of political parties in consolidating the democratic experience in Iraq during the period (2003–2014) by highlighting their contributions to managing the political process and building the institutions of the democratic system, alongside an analysis of the most prominent challenges that faced their performance. The research relies on the historical method to trace the evolution of political parties, the analytical method to study their functions and roles, and the comparative method to analyze their performance in light of democratic literature and models, based on constitutional and legislative texts as well as specialized academic studies. The results showed that political parties contributed to enhancing party pluralism, expanding political participation, organizing electoral competition, and participating in the formation of constitutional authorities, which supported the democratic transition process after 2003. Conversely, the study revealed major challenges represented by political quotas (Muhasasa), weak internal democracy, the personalization of party leadership, and the overlap of party interests with state institutions, as well as the impact of societal divisions and regional and international interventions. These factors weakened the efficiency of public institutions and limited the consolidation of democratic practices. The research concludes that the success of the democratic experience in Iraq requires institutional political parties that adopt national programs, practice internal democracy, and commit to the rule of law, transparency, and accountability.
